Vaginal Strep Screen (Group B Strep)

Message
A susceptibility is performed on patients with group B strep isolates who are allergic to penicillin.
CDC guidelines recommend prenatal Group B Strep (GBS) culture is performed on all women at 35 to 37 weeks gestation to identify GBS colonization.

Instructions
1. Vaginal: Wipe away excessive amount of secretion or discharge from the vaginal area. Carefully insert the swab into the lower one-third part of vagina, and sample secretions from the mucosa.
2. Rectal: Carefully insert the same swab, approximately 2.5 cm beyond the anal sphincter, and gently rotate to sample anal crypts.
3. Replace the swab in its container and properly label the swab, noting the specimen source of vaginal/rectal.
