Whole blood in a Bactec peds blood culture
Instructions
1. Disinfect blood culture bottles by rubbing stoppers with 70% alcohol and allowing to dry.
2. If palpation is needed after site prep a sterile glove must be used.
3. Using ChloraPrep One-Step Kit, pinch the wings on the applicator to break the ampule. Do not touch sponge. Wet the sponge by repeatedly pressing and releasing the sponge against the treatment area until liquid is visible on the skin. Use gentle repeated back-and-forth strokes for 30 seconds with the CHG sponge and allow to air dry for 30 seconds. Do not blot or wipe away. Discard sponge.
4. Perform venipuncture using a vacutainer safety lok butterfly needle. Do NOT repalpate the venipuncture site.
5. Inoculate blood cultures bottles in the following order: aerobic, anaerobic, (if ordered) and any other blood work is collected last.
6. Multiple blood culture sets may be collected at the same time from separate venipuncture sites.
7. Mix bottles.
8. Label samples noting blood culture set number (i.e. set 1, set 2), and site of collection (peripheral or indicate which line).
