Preferred Specimen
Whole blood collected in a special light blue-top 3.2% sodium citrate tube


Minimum Volume
0.5 mL


Instructions
1. Use a 21 gauge or larger needle from a venous site. Obtain the specimen from an extremity that is free of peripheral venous infusions.
2. Collect a discard tube, approximately 2 mL of blood collected in any test tube other than an EDTA tube.
3. Fill the blue-top specimen collection tube to the black indicator. Do not overfill. Gently invert to mix.
4. NOTE: Blood may be collected from indwelling catheters following the proper blood collection protocol. Avoid EDTA contamination.
