Preferred Specimen
Plasma collected in a light blue-top 3.2% sodium citrate tube

Minimum Volume
0.5 mL

Instructions
Correct ratio of blood to citrate is critical. Avoid hemolysis. Tube must be filled completely and mixed gently 8 times.

Unopened light blue-top citrate tube: Specimens are kept at room temperature and centrifuged within 4 hours of collection to obtain platelet-poor plasma. Centrifuged specimens must be tested within 4 hours of collection. When testing is delayed more than 4 hours, remove the platelet-poor plasma using a plastic pipette taking care to avoid the WBC/platelet buffy layer and transport platelet-poor plasma into a labeled aliquot tube. Freeze immediately. Frozen specimens are stable 14 days.

Platelet-poor Plasma – Centrifuge time varies - Refer to centrifuge time below:
2500-3500 RPM 15 minutes (most outpatient benchtop centrifuges)
3600 RPM 10 minutes
5100 RPM 5 minutes
5100-7200 RPM 3 minutes (Clinical lab STAT testing)
