Instructions
Guthrie Clinic Lab, Corning, Cortland

NASOPHARYNX:
     1. Gently insert nasophayngeal swab approximately ½ the distance to the same-side ear (3-5 cm).
     2. Roll against inside nasal wall.
     3. Immediately place swab into transport tube with viral transport media.
     4. Label source as Nasopharynx.

Guthrie Clinic Lab

NASAL (acceptable source during FLU season):
     1. Insert nasal swab 1-2 cm into nostril.
     2. Rotate swab for 3 seconds.
     3. Using the same swab, repeat for second nostril.
     4. Immediately place recovered specimen into viral transport media.
     5. Label source as Nares.
