Clinical Significance
The major single specific etiology of acute urethritis is Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Urethral inflammations of other etiologies are termed Nongonoccal urethritis (NGU). NGU can have a variety of causes, but Chlamydia and Ureaplasma are thought to account for the majority of cases. Recent studies show the NGU is more common in males than gonococcal urethritis. NGU can appear secondary to a successfully treated gonococcal urethritis.
