Clinical Significance
Total protein measurements are used in the diagnosis and treatment of a variety of diseases involving the liver, kidney, or bone marrow, as well as other metabolic or nutritional disorders. Serum proteins perform a number of functions in the body. In addition to being major structural components of cells, proteins are involved in transport, enzymatic catalysis, homeostatic control, hormonal regulation, blood coagulation, immunity, growth and repair, and heredity.
