Preferred Specimen
All tissue objects removed during operative procedures, except those specimens specifically defined by Medical Board action, must be sent to GBMC's Surgical Pathology Department for examination.
Instructions
Label specimen with patient's name (first and last), date of birth or medical record number, name of requesting physician, and date and source of specimen.1. Place small biopsy specimens not requiring intraoperative consultation immediately in formalin. 2. Place very small specimens between sponges in a tissue processing bag supplied by GBMC. 3. Place organ and larger tissue resections in large biohazard bags. 4. For breast specimens, calculi, lymphoma workup, muscle/nerve biopsies, and testicular biopsies, see individual test listings. 5. Deliver amputations to GBMC's Surgical Pathology Department immediately. 6. Place all other fresh, unfixed specimens not requiring intraoperative consultation into the specimen refrigerator for pickup by GBMC's Surgical Pathology Department personnel.
