Instructions
1. Patient should not cough, deep breathe or move during procedure. 2. Observe patient for signs fo respiratory distress during and after aspiration. 3. After needle is withdrawn, apply slight pressure and a small adhesive bandage to the puncture site.

Heparinized or non-heparinized syringe or vacutainer

Sample does not require being placed on ice unless actual assay time of smple is greater than 20 minutes

Clinical Significance
Increased pleural fluid in the pleural space may result from many pulmonary abnormalities. Alterations in pH of this fluid can aid in diagnosis of pulmonary exudate, empyema, pneumonia or pulmonary abcess.
