Preferred Specimen
Specimens for frozen section may consist of all types of tissue, except bone or calcified tissue
Instructions
Label specimen with patient's name (first and last), date of birth or history number, name of requesting physician, and date and source of specimen.1. Moisten the specimen with saline and place into a dry specimen container, without fixative. 2. Forward entire specimen to lab immediately after excision. 3. Needle-localized breast biopsies should first be transported to GBMC's Mammography for x-ray , then delivered to the lab, accompanied by the specimen radiograph.
Notes:
1. Place order for Surgical Pathology Exam in EPIC and mark for frozen section if needed or complete the "Tissue Examination request Form - Frozen Section" and forward it with the specimen. These forms are supplied by GBMC.
2. The assay cannot be performed on specimens fixed in formalin.
3. Certain tissues and conditions are best examined on permanent section only; these include cone biopsies of the cervix, and lymph nodes when lymphoma is suspected.
4. Tissues consisting predominently of fat are technically difficult and may not be amenable to frozen section.
5. Indicate "frozen section" on specimen label and form.
