Clinical Significance
Bilirubin is an organic compound formed by the reticulo-endothelial system during the normal and abnormal destruction of red blood cells. Measurements of bilirubin are used in the diagnosis of liver disease, in the detection of hemolytic anemia, and to evaluate degrees of jaundice.
