Clinical Significance
B-Type natriuretic peptide (BNP) is a cardiac neurohormone secreted from the cardiac ventricles as a response to ventricular volume expansion and pressure overload. BNP serum and plasma levels, as well as concentrations of the biologically inactive prohormone, proBNP, are elevated in patients with left ventricular dysfunction and correlate with the New York Heart Association (NYHA) class and prognosis. When used with the appropriate cut-off values, proBNP assay yields negative predictive values ranging from 97.8% to 100.0% depending on age and gender. THRESHOLD VALUE: < 75 years of age 125 pg/mL >= 75 years of age 450 pg/mL Patient values exceeding the age-specific threshold values described above may be indicative of CHF.
