Clinical Significance
Essential for diagnosis of gout or pseudogout. Various crystals may be found free and in the cells of synovial fluid. They may be seen by direct and especially by polarizing microscopy. NOTE: Crystals which can cause inflammation are minimally soluble in water and are capable of being phagocytized by mononuclear and polymorphonuclear cells during the inflammatory response. At the height of the response the majority, but not all of the crystals, are intracellular though the extracellular proportion increases as inflammation subsides.
