Preferred Specimen
Voided Specimens: Voided Specimens:
1. Instruct the patient to void and discard first morning specimen. A first-morning voided specimen is not suitable. (24-HOUR COLLECTION IS NOT ACCEPTABLE) 2.Rehydrate patient (give several glasses of water 30 to 60 minutes prior to collection.) 3.Have patient collect another specimen in a clean, sterile screw capped container. 4.Label the specimen appropriately (patient's full name, medical record number and specimen source) Voided Specimens from Cytoscopy: Add 5.0 mL of 50% ethanol fixative to the specimen or equal volume of cytospin collection fluid. 50% ethanol fixative and cytospin collection fluid are supplied by GBMC’s Cytology Laboratory (extension 2814) In-house from the Unit and Outpatient Specimens: Transport immediately to the laboratory for processing. If a lengthy delay in transport is anticipated, the specimen should be refrigerated until transport occurs.
Urinary Tract Washing Specimens:
1. Sterile saline should be used to obtain all irrigations , lavages, barbotages, and washings for cytologic studies. 2. Saline is not suitable for good cell maintenance or preservation. 3. Following the specimen collection, the specimen is placed in a clean, sterile screw capped container. 4. Add 5.0 mL of 50% ethanol fixative to the specimen or equal volume of cytospin fluid. 50% ethanol fixative and cytospin collection fluid are supplied by GBMC’s Cytology Laboratory (extension 2814) 5. Label the specimen appropriately (patient's full name, medical record number and specimen source) 6. Transport immediately to the laboratory or refrigerate until transport

Catheterized Specimens: .

1. Following direct vision brushing of lesion or suspicious area, the disposable brush is clipped off and placed in sterile saline. 2. Add 5.0 mL of 50% ethanol fixative to the specimen or equal volume of cytospin collection fluid. 50% ethanol fixative and cytospin collection fluid are supplied by GBMC’s Cytology Laboratory (extension 2814) 3. Label the specimen appropriately (patient's full name, medical record number and specimen source) 4. Transport immediately to the laboratory or refrigerate until transport occurs. NOTE: If FISH testing is requested, then a separate specimen will be sent to Mayo.
