Clinical Significance
The single most common cause of acute cervicitis is Neisseria gonorrhoeae, an organism which may be missed in 50% of the cases if one relies exclusively on a gram stain. Chlamydia, Herpes simplex, Trichomonas vaginalis, and other assorted pathogens can also cause cervicitis.
