Clinical Significance
Infection with Enterobius vermicularis, the human pinworm parasite, has worldwide distribution. The organism is primarily a parasite of young children. The egg develops rapidly to the infective stage and persists for extended periods on fomites and in the external environment leading to rapid dissemination of the infection from child to child and to adults. It is recommended that all family members be tested if one family member is positive. Infections are especially common in institutional settings.
