Clinical Significance
Measurements of inorganic phosphorus are used in the diagnosis and treatment of various disorders, including parathyroid gland and kidney diseases, and vitamin D imbalance. More than 80% of the bodys phosphorus is present in the bones as calcium phosphate. The remainder is involved in the intermediary metabolism of carbohydrates and is a component of such physiologically important substances as phospholipids, nucleic acids, and ATP.1 Phosphorus is present in blood as inorganic and organic phosphates, nearly all the latter residing in the erythrocytes. The small amount of extracellular organic phosphate exists almost exclusively in the form of phospholipid; the remainder of serum phosphorus is present as inorganic phosphate.
