Instructions

The specimen should be submitted to the lab as soon as possible after collection, preferably in less than 1 hour.
Fluid specimens obtained through the skin should use appropriate skin disinfection technique. Fluid may be submitted to the laboratory in a syringe as long as the needle is removed and it is appropriately capped.

Clinical Significance
Fluid for bacteriology testing should be collected from a site representative of the active disease process.
