Reference Range
15.0-65.0 pg/mL
A 50% drop in intact PTH drawn from a patient 10 minutes after first excision of PTH producing tissue, when compared to a baseline sample drawn prior to surgery, indicates successful removal of the PTH producing tissue.

Clinical Significance
Testing for IPTH can be useful for a quick quantitative assessment of parathyroid gland secretory hormone. Since parathyroid hormone has a half-life of 3 - 4 minutes a significant drop in intact PTH after excision of an enlarged gland indicates that the hypersecretory parathyroid tissue has been removed. The resulting fall in intact PTH level indicated that there may be no further need to dissect and localize the remaining normal parathyroid glands.
