Instructions
Collection Instructions Before the aspiration is performed: 1. Line up 6 slides, frosted side up, and label each slide in pencil with the patient’s full name, medical record number and specimen source. 2. Label and open the Coplin jar containing 95% alcohol and place it next to the slides. 3. Label the jar of CytoRich Red collection fluid with the patient name, medical record number and specimen source. 4. Label and open a plastic slide box Note: Materials for ancillary studies should be immediately available (RPMI for Flow Cytometry) 5. For core biopsy material, label and open a container of formalin fixative. Microbiology specimens should be collected in sterile saline. Smear preparation after aspiration: 1.From each aspiration, up to 3 pairs of slides should be prepared. Each slide pair will consist on 1 air-dried smear and 1 smear fixed in 95% alcohol a. When the aspiration is completed, expel 1-2 drops of aspirated material into the center of 3 slides. The open edge of the needle bevel is directed down toward the slide surface. b. A second, clean slide is inverted over the drop. The specimen is allowed to spread WITHOUT applying pressure. The slides are then gently pulled apart in opposite directions. c. For each slide pair, fix one slide in 95% ethanol and allow one slide (bottom one) to air dry. d. When aspiration of the lesion is complete, rinse the needle in CytoRich Red collection fluid. All core biopsy material is collected in formalin fixative. f. Transport specimen immediately to the Cytology lab. Rapid Assessment for Specimen Adequacy is available as follows: Note: Direct Smears Only For ON-SITE Rapid assessment - please notify the Cytology lab (ext 2814) 24 hours in advance if possible. Alternate procedure - transport slides immediately to the Cytology lab for Rapid staining and evaluation. Please provide all pertinent clinical information and a phone number to call the results. Priority Pneumothorax or Same-Day Preliminary Results: If the patient develops a pneumothorax during the aspiration procedure and reaspiration may be necessary on the following day, please notify GBMC’s Cytology Department as soon as possible. Preliminary results will be given the same day without the benefit of the tissue cell block material. A final result will be given the next day. ** See special collection instructions.
