Clinical Significance
The most important aspect of pregnancy management is detection of pregnancy and establishment of accurate estimates of fetal age. In the first weeks of pregnancy, hCG concentrations rise geometrically in maternal serum. Detectable amounts of hCG (approx. 5 mIU/mL) are present 8 to 11 days after conception, which is the third week of pregnancy as measured from the LMP. HCG is also present in ectopic pregnancy (when blastocyst implants in a location other than the body of the uterus) or abnormal intrauterine pregnancy.
