Clinical Significance
Vancomycin is a glycopeptide antibiotic which is bactericidal against many gram-positive and some gram-negative cocci. It is useful in therapy of severe staphylococcal (including methicillin-resistant staphylococci) infections in patients who cannot receive or who have failed to respond to the penicillins and cephalosporins. Vancomycin HCI has been used successfully alone in the treatment of staphylococcal (including methicillin-resistant staphylococci) endocarditis. Because of its ototoxicity, vancomycin should be used with care in patients with renal insufficiency. Concurrent and sequential use of other neurotoxic and/or nephrotoxic antibiotics, particularly streptomycin, neomycin, kanamycin, gentamicin, cephaloridine, paramomyfin, viomycin, polymyxin.
