Clinical Significance
Gamma-glutamyltransferase measurement is principally used to diagnose and monitor hepatobiliary disease. It is currently the most sensitive enzymatic indicator of liver disease with normal values rarely found in the presence of hepatic disease. g-GT is also used as a sensitive screening test for occult alcoholism.1 Elevated serum g-GT levels are found in patients who chronically take drugs such as phenobarbital and phenytoin.
