Clinical Significance
"Fibrinogen is the final substrate in the coagulation cascade. It is converted to fibrin by the action of thrombin formed in the final stage of clotting. The formation of a solid gel or fibrin network signals the completion of coagulation. Fibrinogen has been described as an acute phase reactant protein and may be elevated in many infectious disease states, in pregnancy, and in certain myeloproliferative disorders. Deficiencies of fibrinogen are frequently secondary to thrombolytic therapy, or in association with disseminated intravascular coagulation."
