Instructions
Bronchoscopy Brushing
1. Label the specimen appropriately (patient's name, history number/medical record number and specimen source).
2. Following direct vision brushing, the disposable spiral brush is cut off and immediately placed in a screw-capped sterile container of sterile saline.
3. Label the specimen appropriately (patient name, medical record number and specimen source) NOTE: Direct smearing of bronchial brushing onto glass slides is NOT RECOMMENDED due to problems with air-drying and crush artifact that compromise cytologic evaluation.
Bronchoscopy Washing/Lavage
1. Label the specimen appropriately (patient's name, history number/medical record number and specimen source).
2. Bronchial washing or bronchial lavage collected during the endoscopic examination should also be collected in sterile saline solution in a container appropriately labeled, including the specific specimen site.
3. When applicable, if the specimen requires cell count, differential count or GMS staining, this should be indicated in the EPIC order or requisition.
