Clinical Significance
Cortisol (Compound F), secreted at the rate of approximately 25 mg/day, is one of the main corticosteroids secreted by the adrenals. As the major glucocorticoid secreted by the zona fasciculata of the adrenal cortex, it has a physiological effect on carbohydrate metabolism by promoting gluconeogenesis, deposition of liver glycogen and elevation of blood glucose concentration due to decreased carbohydrate utilization. It also inhibits amino acid uptake, exhibits anti-inflammatory actions, anti-allergic actions, and immunosuppressive actions. The major site of cortisol metabolism is the liver, where it is inactivated and then excreted by the kidneys.
