Clinical Significance
This test is performed when carbohydrate deprivation (e.g.. starvation) or decreased utilization of carbohydrates (e.g.. diabetes mellitus) causes an increased production of acetoacetate and the quantity present may exceed the capacity of the peripheral tissues to metabolize this compound.
