CYTOLOGY, BODY CAVITY FLUID
Test CodeAP5
CPT Codes
88305, 88104
Instructions
Body Cavity Fluid
1. Specimen Identification: Label specimen with patient's name (first and last), history number, name of requesting physician, and date and source of specimen.
2. Add 3 units of heparin per mL of fluid collected to prevent clotting.
3. Gently agitate the container to mix the heparin with fluid.
4. Send fluid in a sterile, heparinized container to the laboratory.
NOTE:
1. Do not send Pleur Evac containers to the laboratory as fluid and/or clot removal is difficult.
2. Long-standing fluid accumulation may yield cellular material that is too degenerate for adequate cytologic evaluation. A repeat tap in 2-3 days after the original tap often yields more diagnostic material.
Body Cavity Washings (Pelvic/Peritoneal Washing)
1. Specimen Identification: Label specimen with patient's name (first and last), history number, name of requesting physician, and date and source of specimen.
2. Immediately fix in equal amount of CytoRich Red collection fluid.
3. Transport immediately to Cytology lab. Refrigerate if any delay is expected.
