Clinical Significance
Ferritin is an iron storage protein. Measurements are used in the diagnosis of abnormal iron metabolism such as iron deficiency anemia. Ferritin determinations are useful in evaluating iron metabolism, and determinations at the beginning of therapy provide a baseline measurement of the iron depot level. A storage deficiency I the reticulo-endothelial system (RES) can be detected at a very early stage.
