Clinical Significance
Trichomonas vaginalis is frequently associated with persistent vaginitis and has been considered to have a causative role. The patient presents signs of inflammation and complains of itching, burning and discharge. Infection in the urethra in the male also occurs and may be asymptomatic or symptomatic, resulting in some inflammation and discharge. The trichomonad, when present, can be demonstrated in the urine by microscopic examination; or, discharge material may be collected on a swab and submitted to the laboratory in a small amount of saline (0.85% NaCl).
