Clinical Significance
Caffeine is a central nervous system stimulant. Its medical uses include restoring mental alertness, as an enhancement to the medical effectiveness of certain medications, and as part of treatment for breathing problems in premature infants. An overdose of caffeine can result in a state termed caffeine intoxication or caffeine poisoning. The analysis of urine specimens for the presence of caffeine, and/or its relative quantitative value, can assist clinicians in assessing potential caffeine poisonings or compliance with dependence treatment regimens, especially when serum collection may be precluded or difficult.
