Preferred Specimen
Sterile screw-cap leakproof tubes
1-2 mL of fluid in each of three tubes.
Bacterial culture: Do not refrigerate, transport immediately to Lab; Use tube 2 or 3 whichever is less bloody
Patient Preparation
Disinfect site with 2% iodine tincture or other surgical preparation set 2. Insert a needle with stylet at L3-L4, L4-L5, or L5-S-1 interspace. 3. On reaching the subarachnoid space, remove the stylet and collect 1-2 ml of fluid in each of three leakproof tubes.
Minimum Volume
Bacteria =0.5 mL; Fungi =0.5 mL; AFB =0.5 mL; Virus =0.5mL
Transport Temperature
CSF bacterial culture: Sample should be transported to lab immediately at Room Temperature. Micro should receive tube 2 or 3 whichever is less bloody.
CSF Viral, AFB and Fungal cultures should be refrigerated if not processed right away.
