Newborn Screen Follow Up Confirmatory Testing

This testing is ordered when the patient's newborn screen is positive as reported by the CA State Newborn Screening Program.
The testing is sent to various State specified laboratories for testing depending on the analyte that is positive on the initial screen.
The testing is treated like a KIT test with the exception that the patient should not be charged for venipuncture or testing. Only the NBSF should be ordered which has no associated billing.

Patient should present with a newborn screening requisition for the specified reference lab that will perform the testing.

See special instructions on the Newborn Screening Followup Requisition. The instructions on the requisition should be followed exactly for collection and shipping of the sample. The Newborn Screening Follow Up paperwork should accompany the specimen to the reference lab.

Various depending on testing required. Testing may be done at the Quest Diagnostics - Nichols Institute, Children's Hospital Oakland, or Stanford University Medical Center - Newborn Screening Programs depending the abnormality found by the state on initial screening.

The report once completed will be sent directly from the performing reference laboratory to the Newborn Screening Center (NBS) local area office who will notify the requesting physician's office. No results will be available in the CHOMP Laboratoty Information System of the EPF Horizon Patient Folder.

The results from the reference lab will be reported to the Newborn Screening Area Service Center for Monterey County: Stanford Medical Center (650) 724-8120  who will contact the requesting physician with the results.
