Uric Acid for Rasburicase

Message
Test measures uric acid level using regular laboratory uric acid analysis but requires strict temperature collection, transport and stability requirements to prevent in vitro degredation of uric acid.

Test Code
LAB6228

Alias/See Also
URASB

CPT Codes
84550

Includes
LOINC: 3084-1

Instructions
"Routine venipuncture. Draw blood in prechilled green top (sodium heparin) tube, Place immediately in ice water bath and send for URASB with chilled centrifugation (4°C). Chilled plasma must be maintained in an ice waterbath and tested within 4 hours or uric acid value will be falsely low."

Transport Temperature
Transport on Ice.

Specimen Stability
Refrigerate, stable 4 hours

Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Room Temperature specimen. Sample MUST be kept cold to reduce the in vitro enzymatic degredation
of Uric Acid by Rasburicase.

Methodology
Colorimetric:Hydrogen peroxide oxidizes a leuco dye in the presence of peroxidase to generate a colored dye by reflectance spectrometry.

Setup Schedule
"Daily
STAT"

Report Available
1 hour

Reference Range

Female: 2.5-6.2 mg/dL
Male: 3.5-8.5 mg/dL

Clinical Significance
Uric acid for Rasburicase measurement is used in the monitoring of rasburicase therapy for the treatment of hyperuricemia.
