Specimen Stability

?Sputum for routine culture must be received in the microbiology department within 4 hours of collection.
They should not remain un-refrigerated for more than half an hour.




Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)

1. Saliva (sputum Q score of zero or less). 2. >4 hour old sputum 3. Unrefrigerated specimen 4. Swab specimen (unless nasapharyngeal swab)
