Instructions

Tissue, sputum, skin scrapings, corneal scrapings, hair, nail clippings. Specimen must be labeled with patient's first and last name, source, and date and time collected.

Specimen Stability

Specimen in a sterile container, or wet prep slide. Do not put nail clippings or hair in a moist environment (saline). Send immediately to laboratory at 20-25°C.

Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)

Nonsterile or leaking containers, dried out wet prep slides and frozen specimens.

Methodology
Microscopic exam with potassium hydroxide.
