Specimen Stability

Specimens can be kept at room temperature for up to 12 hours. For hemogram, refrigerate at 4°C for up to 48 hours. Do not freeze. CHOMP Hematology Dept stores samples for a maximum of 24 hours.


Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Insufficient quantity; clotted specimen; specimen >48 hours at room temperature; improperly labeled specimen


Methodology
The CBC is based on the Coulter method of counting and sizing and asingle beam photometer for hemoglobinopathy.

Report Available
STAT outpatient: 2 hours; STAT inpatient and ER: 45 minutes
