Collect one 4.5 light green top (lithium heparin) tubeor one 5ml Red/gold top serum separator tube "

Specimen Stability

Specimen will be stored in lab for 3 days refrigerated then discarded.

Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)

Gross hemolysis, lipemia, or icterus; interfering substances: ascorbic acid (50 mg/dL); IgG (3000 mg/dL), failure to follow collection and handling instructions.

Methodology
Colorimetric:The density of dye formed is prop'l to the HDL cholesterol conc. present in the sample and is measured by reflectance s'photometry.

Clinical Significance

High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol is used to evaluate the risk of developing coronary heart disease (CHD). The risk of CHD increases with lower HDL cholesterol concentrations.
