Patient Preparation
Glucose load (adults: 75 g glucose; pediatrics: 1.75 g/kg body weight, up to 75 g)
Administer 75g glucola otherwise unless specified by physician.

For pediatric or for small adults weighing less than 95 Lbs. refer to procedure

and contact a Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CS) or a Pathologist.

If patient weighs less than 45 lbs. refer to a pathologist.

Patient should NOT be allowed to leave the area of the duration of the testing, unless specifically instructed by their physician , or if performing a post-prandial tolerance test.

The glucose drink must be completely consumed within 5 minutes.

Glucola® contains corn syrup, if the patient has a corn allergy refer them to the ordering provider.

We will accept Glucose Tolerance drinks brought in by the
patient if the drink specifies the dose of glucose which matches the test
being done and is already approved by their physician to use. The glucose load
sample must be in liquid form, and any mixing of the sample must be performed
by the patient prior to arriving for collection. Please note the drink and
patients' statement regarding their physician approving the drink in comments.

Instructions

"Routine venipuncture Collect one Gray top (sodium fluoride) tube collect 1-hour postglucose administration specimen.
Centrifuge within 2 hours of collection
Refrigerate within 4 hours.

Stable refrigerated 3 days

Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)

Insufficient quantity; hemolysis; plasma left on cells overnight; failure to follow specimen stability requirements

Clinical Significance

Glucose measurements are used in the diagnosis and treatment ofcarbohydrate metabolism disorders including diabetes mellitus, neonatalhypoglycemia, idiopathic hypoglycemia, and pancreatic islet cellcarcinoma.
