Specimen Stability
If samples are not applied immediately, they can be stored in a clean sealed container for 24 hours at room temperature or 5 days refrigerated. Sample should be tested for pH within a few minutes after collection.


Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Patient receiving nasogastric tube feeding to which dye has been added; specimens not meeting stability requirements; if patient has ingested foods that could cause false-positive results (ie, incompletely cooked meat, turnips, melons, and radishes); ingestion of vitamin C (ascorbic acid) will cause a false negative.

"Information
The Gastroccult® test is a semiquantitative guaiac method for detecting occult blood in gastric aspirate or vomitus. The dual identification of occult blood and pH can be useful in the early detection of gastric trauma or deteriorating gastric condition, and evaluation of antacid therapy. It is to be used only as a screening method."
