Fibrin Split Products

Test Code
LAB761

Alias/See Also
Fibrin Degradation Products; FSP; FDPT; FDP

CPT Codes
85362

Includes
Detection of fibrinogen/fibrin degradation products in serum

Preferred Specimen
Lt Blue Citrate; Dark Blue FDP
Completely fill the Blue Top (sodium citrate) tube. Underfilled tubes will not be accepted. Mix sample immediately by gentle inversion at least six times

Minimum Volume
2 mL

Instructions
Routine venipuncture Collect one Light Blue top -- Citrate tube

Transport Temperature
Refrigerate

Specimen Stability
Refrigerate, stable 3 days; do not freeze.

Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Draw of <2 mL whole blood; specimen collected in wrong tube type; improperly labeled specimen

Methodology
direct latex agglutination (semi-quantitative)

Setup Schedule
Daily

Report Available
Within 24 hours STAT: 1 hour after collection

Limitations
Fibrin degradation products are found at low levels in the sera of all healthy individuals because of normal fibrinolytic mechanisms. The mean normal levels in resting adults is 4.9 +/- 2.8 ug/mL.

Reference Range
Less than 10 ug/mL

Clinical Significance
Fibrin degradation products are found at low levels in the sera of all healthy individuals due to normal fibrinolytic mechanisms. Elevated FDP
levels are associated with disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), deep vein thrombosis, some pregnancy disorders, myocardial infarction
and pulmonary embolisms.
