Instructions
Routine venipuncture.
Separate serum or plasma from cells as soon as possible (centrifuge specimen) and send to the lab within 4 hours of collection.  
Bilirubin is photosensitive. Protect samples from light


Specimen Stability
Refrigerate, stable 48 hours; stable 8 hours at room temperature; stable >48 hours if frozen.


Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Insufficient quantity; gross hemolysis; gross lipemia (not corrected by airfuge); failure to follow stability requirements; prolonged exposure to light

Clinical Significance
Direct bilirubin measurements are used in the diagnosis and treatment of liver, hemolytic, hematological, and metabolic disorders, including hepatitis and gallbladder block.
