Instructions
"Routine venipuncture; draw just prior to next oral dose. For I.V. administration draw 2-4 hours postdose. . Note: For patients receiving fosphenytoin therapy collect as trough (at least 2 hours after I.V. infusion or at least 4 hours after I.M. injection).
Collect one 4.5ml light green top (heparin) tube, or green Microtainerâ„¢or one 5ml Red/gold top serum separator tube,"


Specimen Stability
Refrigerate, stable 7 days; stable 4 days at room temperature; stable 6 months if frozen.


Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Failure to follow stability requirements


Methodology
Multiple point -immuno rate:The rate of dye formation is inversely propotional to the phenytoin concentration in the sample.

Clinical Significance
Falsely elevated phenytoin levels may occur in critically ill uremic patients receiving fosphenytoin.
