2mL Cerebrospinal fluid; Minimum volume 0.5 mL in a Screw-cap container.


Specimen Stability
Refrigerate; can be frozen for 7-10 days for repeat determination.


Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Insufficient quantity; failure to follow stability requirements


Methodology
Colorimetric:The oxidation of sample glucose is catalyzed by glucose oxidase to form hydrogen peroxide and gluconate.

Reference Range
40-70 mg/dL


Clinical Significance
The most important reason for measuring CSF glucose is in the diagnosis of bacterial meningitis. A low CSF glucose (<40 mg/dL) is found in about 50% to 60% of patients with bacterial meningitis.
