Clinical Significance
"Reactive changes in leukocytes, as seen in many infectious and inflammatory conditions, include alterations in the blood total leukocyte concentration (increase or decrease), in the relative proportions of different leukocytes, and in the leukocyte morphology.
Leukocytosis is the increase in the number of circulating leukocytes where as leukopenia is the decrease in the number of circulating leukocytes. This may involve any one or more types of leukocytes. Generally, only mature, nondividing leukocytes are present
in the peripheral blood.
Measurement of the hemoglobin level or packed cell volume (Hct) is the usual method determining whether a patient has anemia. The RBC indices are used to estimate the size and hemoglobin content of the RBC.
Thrombocytopenia is the reduction in the number of circulating platelets. Reduced number or absence of megakaryocytes in the bone marrow as seen in aplastic anemia and myelophthisis is suggestive of decreased platelet
production, whereas normal or increased numbers of megakaryocytes as seen in idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura relates to increased peripheral destruction of platelets.
