Preferred Specimen
Routine venipuncture. One 4.5ml Light green top (heparin) tube or one 5ml Red/gold top serum separator tube.


Instructions

Specimens should be drawn just before the next dose for trough values. If toxicity is suspected, then specimens may be drawn at any time.




Specimen Stability
Refrigerate, stable 48 hours; stable 8 hours at room temperature; stable 6 months if frozen.


Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Failure to follow stability requirements


Methodology
Multiple point rate-immuno rate:The rate of dye formation is inversely propotional to the carbamazepine concentration in the sample.

Clinical Significance
Carbamazepine is indicated for the treatment of psychomotor and grand mal seizures as well as trigeminal neuralgia. Carbamazepine is monitored for suspected inadequate dose or toxicity.
