Cytologic evaluation of ThinPrep preparations. If requested,reflex testing for fluorescent in-situ hybridization (FISH) when cytology results are atypical or suspicious.
Preferred Specimen
Voided and Instrumented Urines: CytoLyt fixative collection cup or fresh in sterile cup
Minimum Volume
60 mL of specimen
Note: Specimens consisting of less than 60 mLs of fluid may be considered non-diagnostic
Instructions
Voided Urine – Clean catch, random specimen:
1. Do not send first morning specimen or twenty four hour collection specimen
2. Instruct patient to drink liquids and collect the specimen as soon as possible. Female patients should obtain midstream clean catch.
3. Immediately send specimen to the laboratory or collect in CytoLyt fixative.
Catheterized Urine, Bladder, and Ureteral washings: send immediately to the laboratory or collect in CytoLyt fixative.
Complete required Cytology Requisition giving all pertinent clinical history especially method of collection

Urine: Fresh specimen will degenerate.Stable if collected in Cytolyt fixative collection cup or add equalvolume of 50% ethyl alcohol.
Urinary Washings: Unstable at Room Temperature. Specimen not submitted immediately to laboratory will degenerate if not transported in Cytolyt fixative collection cup.

Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
