Clinical Significance
Interpretive Information
The eGFR is calculated based on the 2021 CKD-EPI Creatinine Equation:
eGFR = 142 x min(SCr/κ, 1)α x max(SCr /κ, 1)-1.200 x 0.9938Age x 1.012 [if female]
The eGFR estimates kidney function and is used to determine a patient’s stage of chronic kidney disease based on National Kidney
Foundation guidelines:
• Stage 1 comprises patients who have kidney damage but a normal eGFR (90 or higher).
• Stage 2 comprises patients with a mild reduction in eGFR (60 to 89).
• Stage 3 consists of a moderate eGFR reduction (30 to 59).
• Stage 4 consists of a severe eGFR reduction (15 to 29).
• Stage 5 consists of kidney failure, marked by eGFR <15.
In the absence of kidney damage, neither G1 or G2 fulfill criteria for CKD per KDIGO.
Note: For children <18 years old, eGFR is calculated based on the CKiD U25 Creatinine equation; a calculator is
available on the NIDDK website.
