Preferred Specimen
Body Cavity Fluids - >50-250 mL well-mixed fluid in sterile cup, fresh or fixed in CytoRich Red (50/50 mix); collected/submit separate sample for other lab test (micro, hematology etc...) Bronchial / BAL - >5-20 mL Fresh sample ( do not use fixative) specimen stability: 12-24 hours; * separate sample should be collected for micro-testing CSF - > 3 -10 mL Fresh sample ( do not use fixative) specimen stability: 12-24 hours Flow Cytometry: Sample fresh in RPMI submit 1-3 FNA passes and /or 1-2 tissue core biopsy in RPMI container; stability (24 hours) Smears / Brushing/ Conjunctival Scraping - Clean glass slides (single-end frosted); label with patient name (last name, first name initial) and DOB or MRN; Spray fix slides or immersion (preferable) in 95% alcohol for immediate fixation to prevent sample degradation Urine - >50 ml appropriately-collected voided or catheterized urine, submitted in sterile specimen container, fresh or fixed (50/50 CytoRich Red preservative or 50% Ethanol alcohol) Washings - 10 ml-50 ml balanced saline solution washed over a directly visualized area. Submitted in clean container, preferably fresh, if not being taken immediately to lab, add CytoRich Red preservative fluid using 1:1 solution. Fine Needle Aspirate (FNA) - > 1-4 FNA passes in sterile cup, fresh or fixed in CytoRich Red (50/50 mix) _ (separate) Flow Cytometry sample in RPMI media 1-3 passes (FNA) and / or 1-2 tissue core biopsy Thyroid FNA / Afirma Genetic Testing - > 1-4 FNA passes in sterile cup, fresh or fixed in CytoRich Red (50/50 mix) with 1-2 air dried smears(s) -Afirma Genetic testing submit separate Afirma FNA Protect media vial (1-2 FNA passes); specimen stability: 72 hours refrigerated Thyroid FNA / Thyroseq Testing - 1-4 FNA passes in sterile cup, fresh or fixed in CytoRich Red (50/50 mix) with 1-2 air dried smear(s); submit separate ThyroSeqPrevserv solution vialThyroSeq Genetic testing: Place first pass in CytoRich red FNA container, Place second Full pass into the ThyroSeq Preserve solution secure the via cap and invert to mix, Place vial into the dark specimen bag with a flat frozen pack,(if transport is extended beyond 3 hrs), place subsequent FNA passes into the CytoRich Red FNA container. Package both the FNA and ThyroSeqPreserv vial in a biohazard bag together for transport to the laboratory.
