Clinical Significance
Acetone is present in some pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. Acetone vapors can be toxic at high concentrations. Ethanol is a depressant and sedative drug that is rapidly absorbed from the GI tract. Ethanol is the 3rd leading cause of preventable death in the US. Isopropanol is present if rubbing alcohol. It is more toxic than ethanol when ingested but appears to be no harm when in contact with skin. Methanol is a highly toxic substance used extensively in industry and consumer products. It is rapidly absorbed through the skin, respiratory tract, and GI tract.
